It is named after Charles Lander Cleveland, a local judge who donated land to the Houston East-West Texas Railway for use as stop under the condition that it was named for him.
It was in 1935 when the town had grown enough to see official incorporation. However, no City taxes were levied until 1947, a condition so rare it made for a story in Life Magazine. The town spent the next few decades establishing itself as a civic and trade center for a four-county rural area which is, today , alive with activity.
