The city is a popular vacation resort, as it rests on the border of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park along U.S. Highway 441, which connects Gatlinburg to Cherokee, North Carolina through the national park. Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains feature a beautiful spot of pampered civilization nestled in one of the last tracts of unspoiled wilderness in the eastern United States.

Dollywood and Dollywood's Splash Country which are both named after the famous Dolly Parton and are located in Pigeon Forge, are nearby amusement parks.
