Redfield is a city in Spink County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,897 at the 2000 census. It is also known as the pheasant capital of the world. It is the county seat of Spink County. Redfield is located at 44.875145, -98.517850. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²). 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (1.70%) is water.
Redfield College was established in the town in 1887, and operated until 1932. In 1902 the "Northern Hospital for the Insane," a state institution, opened on a campus just north of town. That facility remains in operation today as the South Dakota Developmental Center.
