Florence is the county seat of and largest city in Florence County. Florence is located at 34.184088, -79.774147. Florence is located in the coastal plain of South Carolina. The terrain is mostly flat. The average elevation above sea level is around 140 ft. Jeffries Creek is a tributary of the Great Pee Dee River and is the main waterway that flows through the city of Florence.

The area is served by Francis Marion University, a public liberal arts school, and Florence-Darlington Tech. Coker College at Hartsville and Coastal Carolina University at Conway are nearby.
