Middletown is a town in Newport County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 17,335 at the 2000 census. It lies to the south of Portsmouth and to the north of Newport on Aquidneck Island, hence the name "Middletown."

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 38.7 km² (14.9 mi²). 33.6 km² (13.0 mi²) of it is land and 5.1 km² (2.0 mi²) of it (13.18%) is water.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
