Poteau is a city in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, United States. It is part of the Fort Smith, Arkansas-Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,939 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Le Flore County. It is the home of the World's Highest Hill, Cavanal Hill. Within the city is Twyman Park, named for former mayor William G. Twyman.

Poteau is located at 35.058560, -94.630116. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 82.0 km² (31.7 mi²). 74.2 km² (28.6 mi²) of it is land and 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²) of it (9.54%) is water.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 12.8% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
