The town was formed in 1802 from parts of the Towns of Augusta and Westmoreland.

In 1920, the population of the Town of Vernon was 4,522.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 98.7 km² (38.1 mi²), all land.

The west town line is the border of Madison County and is formed by the Oneida Creek.
