The town was first settled around 1764. The town was formed from part of the Town of Cobleskill in 1849. In 1851 the town added territory from the Town of Seward.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 78.3 km² (30.2 mi²). 78.2 km² (30.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.10%) is water.

Interstate 88 passes across the town.

The west town line is the border of Otsego County.
