Valley City is a city in Barnes County, North Dakota in the United States. It is the county seat of Barnes County. The population was 6,826 at the 2000 census. Valley City was founded in 1874. The city is known for its many bridges over the Sheyenne River including the Hi-Line Railroad Bridge. These bridges have earned it the distinction of being called the "City of Bridges".

The city is also the home of Valley City State University. (VCSU) is an institution of higher learning in Valley City, North Dakota, part of the North Dakota University System. Founded in 1889 as a normal school, VCSU offers four-year degrees in a number of fields in five academic divisions, as well as a graduate degree in Education.

Attractions:
Lake Ashtabula: Located 12 miles north of Valley City, this recreational secret is full of great fishing, excellent boating and skiing, and is developing into a cabin resort area as well.

The Bjornson Park Public Golf Course is beautifully laid out along the banks of the Sheyenne River on the south side of Valley City Take exit 292 from I-94 and take the south frontage road west. The semi-private Town & Country Club was built in 1922. The nine-hole par-36 course measures 3,054 yards with the Hi-Line Bridge in the background.

Stretching 63 miles along the breathtaking Sheyenne River Valley, from Baldhill Dam to Lisbon following ancient Native American foot paths and pioneer wagon trails, the Sheyenne River Valley Scenic Byway was awarded National Byway designation in June, 2002. Whether it is snowmobiling, cross-country or downhill skiing in the winter or fishing, hiking, biking or canoeing in the summer, the possibilities abound on our byway. In the spring, the air is perfumed with the scent of blooming lilacs, chokecherries, juneberries and wild plums but the valley is especially scenic in the fall of the year.
