Grand Forks is a city in Grand Forks County, North Dakota in the United States. It is the county seat of Grand Forks County and the third largest city in North Dakota. The population was 49,321 at the 2000 census . Grand Forks was founded in 1870 and incorporated in 1881.
Grand Forks is home to the University of North Dakota (UND) and the Grand Forks Air Force Base. University Village is a new commercial district that was built on formerly vacant lands owned by the University of North Dakota. The centerpiece of the Village is the imposing Ralph Engelstad Arena which is used by the University's Fighting Sioux hockey team. All of the buildings in the Village have been built in a similar style to buildings on the nearby UND campus. The area now includes several restaurants and stores, as well as the University bookstore. A new Wellness Center for UND students has recently opened on the Village's west side.
