As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 11,138. It is the county seat of Edgecombe County. Tarboro is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region With many historical churches, some dating back to the early 1700s.

Tarboro is located in the northeast central area of North Carolina. It is on Highway 64 east-west , and 16 miles east of Interstate 95 north-south.
