Smithfield is a town in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 11,510 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Johnston County. Smithfield is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region.

Actress Ava Gardner was born a short distance from Smithfield, in Brogden, North Carolina,and is buried here. The town has an Ava Gardner Museum. Smithfield is also the birthplace of professional wrestler Gregory Helms.
