St. Louis is an independent city in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is bordered by the Mississippi River on the east and by St. Louis County on the north, south, and west. Recently, there has been a significant upturn in construction in Downtown St. Louis. The St. Louis Zoo enjoys the distinction of being the most visited zoo in the United States, having surpassed the San Diego Zoo in terms of popularity. It boasts many exhibits which are animal-friendly in terms of habitat. The zoo is located in Forest Park, adjacent to the St. Louis Art Museum.
The Magic House, a children's hands-on exploration museum, and Worldways Children's Museum, an international children's cultural museum, are also in Kirkwood.
The Missouri Botanical Garden, also known as Shaw's Garden, is one of the world's leading botanical research centers. It possesses a beautiful collection of flowering plants, shrubs, and trees, and includes the Japanese Garden, which features a lake filled with koi and gravel designs.
The region has a diverse range of institutions of higher learning including, the Jesuit Catholic university Saint Louis University which is the oldest university west of the Mississippi and Webster University, Maryville University, Fontbonne University, the Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, Aquinas Institute of Theology, Concordia Seminary, Covenant Theological Seminary, and Missouri Baptist University, a small Christan college, Harris-Stowe State University, the city's only historically black college, and one of four in the Midwest.
Washington University in St. Louis which is one of the top research universities in the nation, internationally known for its schools of Medicine, Architecture, Social Work and Law; the University's school of law is the oldest continuously operating law school west of the Mississippi.
Logan College of Chiropractic is located in Chesterfield and is one of the top Chiropractic colleges in the nation is known for graduating outstanding Chiropractic Physicians and researchers.
