Ely is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 3,724 at the 2000 census.
State Highway 1 and State Highway 169 are two of the main arterial routes in the city. The city is best known by outsiders as the most popular entry point for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Ely is located in the Vermilion Iron Range, and is historically noteworthy for the large underground iron mines in the vicinity.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area - More than one million acres of wilderness and waterways in the heart of the Superior National Forest have been set aside as the federally managed Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).

Hiking - The Ely area provides unique opportunities for those seeking hiking experiences. Depending on the experience you are seeking, assorted hiking trails can lead you either on a short jaunt, vigorous day trip or an extended wilderness trek.

Fishing - Enjoy evening fishing when the swarms of stars appear like specks of silver on a blue-black blanket stretched almost within reach over the tree tops. At times, the incredible flashes of northern lights, will flare with streaks of white, pink or green, arching in ribbons across the sky or dancing like curtains of colors.

Mountain Biking - The Ely Area offers several opportunities for mountain biking with routes to suit various skill levels and interests. For the true adventure explorer the possibilities are virtually unlimited as the terrain ranges from good gravel roads to grassy one-lane paths. The possibility of spotting wildlife is excellent and the areas provide for fabulous photography.

Birding - Birds are prevalent in the Ely Area and the Superior National Forest depending on the season and the habitat. Approximately 155 species of birds breed in the forest.

Golf - Ely has a 9-hole, 3,245 yard, par 36 course that is open to the public. The course is open (weather permitting) from late April until late October. Rental equipment is available.
