Howell is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,232. It is the county seat of Livingston County6 and is located mostly within Howell Township, but is politically independent.

Howell is known for the Michigan Balloonfest Challenge, an annual hot air balloon festival that is usually held the third weekend of June that the city hosts.

The city is also the site of the Howell Melon Festival, an annual celebration of the Howell melon, a juicy hybrid cantaloupe known to grow only in the area surrounding area. The three day festival, held in mid-August, draws approximately 50,000 visitors each year.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 km² (4.3 mi²). 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.64% water.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 33.6% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 96.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.2 males.
