Richmond is the 6th largest city in Kentucky and the county seat of Madison County. It was named after Richmond, Virginia. In 2004, the city population was 30,008. By 2010 it is expected to have a population of 34,292. It is home to Eastern Kentucky University.

Richmond is located at 37.744720, -84.293562. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 49.9 km² (19.2 mi²). 49.5 km² (19.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.73%) is water.

The age distribution, influenced strongly by the presence of Eastern Kentucky University, is: 17.5% under the age of 18, 31.7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 13.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 90.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.8 males.
