Ottawa is a city situated along the Marais des Cygnes River in the central part of Franklin County, located in east-central Kansas, in the central United States. The population was estimated to be 12,597 in the year 2005. It is the county seat and most populous city of Franklin County. Ottawa is included in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area.

Ottawa is the central point for three great fishing lakes located justoutside Franklin County: Clinton Lake to the north, Pomona Lake to the west, and Hillsdale Lake to the east. Each is easily accessible and less than a 30-minute drive from Ottawa. All of the lakes were built as Army Corps of Engineers flood projects and contain ample opportunities for recreation. Each lake offers camping, boating access, swimming, wildlife viewing, fishing, and Pomona and Clinton both have adjacent hunting available. Fishing includes crappie, channel catfish, flathead, bass, bluegill,and everyone's favorite - walleye.
