Independence is a city in Montgomery County, Kansas, United States. The population was 9,846 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. Independence is located at 37.228251, -95.711392, along the Verdigris River just south of its confluence with the Elk River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.9 km² (5.0 mi²), all land.
