El Dorado is a city situated along the Walnut River in the central part of Butler County, located in south-central Kansas, in the central United States. The population was estimated to be 12,659 in the year 2005. It is the county seat and most populous city of Butler County. El Dorado is included in the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area.
El Dorado is located at 37.821117, -96.858281. The city is situated along the western bank of the Walnut River, southwest of El Dorado Lake. It is located 30 miles east-northeast of Wichita at the junction of U.S. Routes 54 and 77 and K-254. The Kansas Turnpike, designated as Interstate 35, bypasses northwest of the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.6 km² (6.4 mi²), of which 16.5 km² (6.4 mi²) is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²), or 0.93%, is water.
