Pella is the home of Central College as well as several manufacturing companies, including Pella Corporation and Vermeer Manufacturing Company. It is also the site of the future Earthpark indoor rainforest project, scheduled for completion in 2010.
Pella, reminiscent of the Netherlands with its Dutch architecture, canal, windmills, wooden shoes and tulips, it is a European oasis in the Heartland.
Points of Interest:
Pella Historical Village - is a world of flower gardens, architectural models and antique Dutch heirlooms brought to Pella by immigrants from the Netherlands. Twenty-two Dutch steep roofed buildings in the museum complex preserve Pella's history and sturdy Holland traditions.
The Vermeer Mill, a fully functioning 1850's city windmill, stands 124 feet tall and is the cornerstone of the Historical Village. Included in your tour of the Village is a trip inside the mill. Once inside you will travel up through the mill to the observation and grinding level (by stairs or elevator) and watch millers at work grinding grain.
This is the original home of Dominie H.P. Scholte, the founder of Pella. Scholte promised his wife Mareah a new home like the elegant Dutch home they had left in the Netherlands. He kept his promise; within a year of their arrival the 23-room Scholte mansion was constructed. The home is furnished with Scholte family antiques.
Tulip Toren - In 1940, a wooden version of the Tulip Tower was designed and built by a local architect inspired by the biblical description of King Solomon's temple. The tower deteriorated after three years and was removed. In 1968, a permanent structure was built as "a gift to the people and community of Pella." During Tulip Time the colors of the flag of the Netherlands are flown from the soaring 65-foot high twin pylons, and a red carpet welcomes the Tulip queen and her court.
