Cape Coral is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 102,286 at the 2000 census. According to the U.S Census estimates of 2005, the city had a population of 140,010, making it the largest city in Southwest Florida. Cape Coral is one of two major cities that make up the Cape Coral-Fort Myers MSA, the other being Fort Myers. As of July 1, 2005, the population estimate for the metropolitan area was 544,758.
Cape Coral was built about 40 years ago by two land speculators who believed that the property's location on the Gulf Coast provided abundant sunshine and almost endless opportunities for waterfront living.

The City is divided into Four Quadrants: NW, NE, SW and SE. The East-West Divide is Santa Barbara Blvd., and the North-South divide is Embers Pkwy/Hancock Bridge Pkwy. These are also the centers for the city's street grid.
The Cape Coral Bridge connects Cape Coral Parkway to College Parkway in Fort Myers. The Veterans Memorial Bridge connects Veterans Memorial Parkway to Colonial Boulevard, also in Fort Myers. The Hancock Bridge connects the west end of Hancock Bridge Road, which after intersecting Santa Barbara Boulevard sweeps north to its approximate terminus on Pine Island Road, with the east end of Hancock Bridge Road, which terminates at U.S. Highway 41.
