Amelia Island is the southernmost of the Sea Islands, a chain of barrier islands that stretches along the east coast of the United States from South Carolina to Florida. It is 13 miles long (21 km) and approximately 4 miles (6 km) wide at its widest point. Amelia Island is situated south of Cumberland Island, Georgia, off the coast of Florida in Nassau County. Fernandina Beach and Amelia City are both located on the island.

With 13 miles (21 km) of coastline, Amelia Island is one of the most popular beach destinations on Florida's First Coast. Outdoor activities include sailing, kayaking, and six championship golf courses. There are many restaurants, boutiques, and galleries—as well as a historic downtown shopping district. It is host to the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, the Amelia Island Jazz Festival, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance and the Bausch & Lomb Tennis Championships.

Known as the "Isle of 8 Flags", it had the following flags flown over it since 1562: France, Spain, Great Britain, Spain (again), the Patriots of Amelia Island, the Green Cross of Florida, Mexico, the Confederate States of America, and the United States.

Tourist Attractions:

Bird Watching - Located on Big Talbot Island, just south of Amelia, is the Bird Emergency Aid and Kare Sanctuary-B.E.A.K.S. At B.E.A.K.S., injured birds are nursed back to health and released. If unable to fend for themselves, they have a home there for life. Large cages at B.E.A.K.S. hold Bald Eagles, Owls, Vultures and even an Emu. Walk the wooded trails.

Marine and Animal Life - The numerous creeks and rivers which feed the Intracoastal Waterway provide wide-eyed onlookers the opportunity for viewing dolphins, manatees, otters, and alligators.

Fernandina Beach City Parks - Children's playgrounds are available at all city parks: Main Beach next to the Cabana, Central Park, Atlantic Recreation Center and Egans Creek Park are all on Atlantic Avenue. Martin Luther King Park is located at 1200 Elm Street.

Bicycle Trails - Fort Clinch State Park offers outstanding trails, both paved and off-road. The trail system includes a six-mile off-road loop trail for hikers and off-road bicyclists. The park’s paved road and several miles of beaches along Cumberland South with hard packed sand provide great riding during low tides.
