Lewes is an incorporated city in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. According to 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 3,116.
This was the first European settlement in Delaware. It was a trading post founded by Dutch settlers in 1631, and was named Zwaanendael (or Swaanendael, meaning "swan valley"), it was located on the site of present day Lewes
Since Lewes was the earliest town founded state, in the first state (Delware was first to ratify the consituoin), the down boasts as being "The first town in the first state."
Lewes, together with the towns of Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, South Bethany, and Fenwick Island, comprises Delaware's beach resort area and is Sussex County's most densely-populated and fastest-growing area.
Lewes is the southern terminus of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, where tourists arrive in the summer, to visit historic Lewes, to reach the outlet malls, or continue their journey.
Lewes is adjacent to Cape Henlopen State Park and is close to the outlet malls of Rehoboth Beach.
It serves as a vacation and resort spot popular with residents of northern Delaware, particularly New Castle County. Even though the city technically sits on the lower reach of the Delaware Bay, it is nonetheless considered an ocean resort, particularly as the ocean is only as far away as Cape Henlopen.

2nd street is Lewes' main street that has many shops, restaurants, and historical venues.
Fisherman's Wharf is a dock that stretches along the Rehobeth Canal. It features multiple restaurants, bait shops, and the dock(in season) has hundreds of boats to look at from all over.
