Morgan Hill is a city located in the southern part of Santa Clara County, California, USA. Founded on November 10, 1906, the city was named after Hiram Morgan Hill, a San Franciscan who built a country retreat home here in 1884. Originally a community of ranchers, farmers and orchardists, the city has evolved into a bedroom community for the high-tech industries in Silicon Valley. As of the United States 2000 Census, the city had a population of 33,556.

The Morgan Hill House at Villa Mira Monte is unique, incorporating the best features of Queen Anne and Stick/Eastlake design. It was originally built in 1884 by Hiram Morgan Hill for his bride, Diana Murphy Hill. The couple, along with their daughter Diane, lived in San Francisco and used the house as a country retreat for themselves and their many friends. In fact , the town acquired its name because train conductors would call out, "Morgan Hill's" when making special stops for the Hill's guests to disembark. The house was sold by the Hills around 1913 and was subsequently a private home, a funeral parlor and an antique shop. In 1992, Villa Mira Monte was deeded to the historical Society with the proviso that it be rescued from dereliction and be available to the public in some way. After five years of hard work, the house was ready for use in the summer of 1998.

A fascinating history of the City of Morgan Hill is on display here at The museum is housed in the former John Acton family residence. The Acton family moved to Morgan Hill from Minnesota in 1910 where they joined John’s grandparents, George and Mary Kimble, who had previously settled in the area. In 1911 he built his family home at 170 Warren Avenue on Nob Hill for a cost of $2,700 and began a successful career as an orchardist. Edward Acton, John’s son, followed in his fathers footsteps on the family farm and continued growing walnuts and other fruit crops.

Hundreds of artifacts and photographs tell the story of our city's development through the years. In addition, there is an extensive collection of rocks and minerals on display, including Morgan Hill’s own Poppy Jasper.
