Thank you for your interest in La Posada, Mary Colters masterpiece and the Last Great Railroad Hotel. La Posada was built as an architectural fantasy. In 1928 Mary Colter - most influential designer in the Southwest - was asked by the Fred Harvey Company to design what was destined to become the Santa Fe Railways flagship and the finest small hotel in Arizona. Colter created an imaginary timber and cattle baron - a Spanish Don - and built for him a magnificent hacienda. To enter the building is to enter another era - like visiting an old castle in Spain or colonial Mexico. La Posada was built in they style of the late 1700s at a cost rumored at 2 million - an astonishing sum for the day. The main house of 68,000 square feet is bigger than Hearst Castle. La Posada was only open from 1930 to 1957, then closed to the public. It was almost knocked down many times. Today everything is being restored - acres of gardens, beautiful painted ceilings, stone floors, faux-adobe walls. Weve even set up a workshop to make furniture on-site as done at great country estates in the 18th century - the era of La Posadas inspiration. Come stay with us.
