Marathon is a town located in the Thunder Bay district in Ontario. It is located on the north shore of Lake Superior north of Pukaskwa National Park. It is linked by Peninsula Road (formerly Highway 626) with the southern route of the Trans-Canada Highway, which is also Highway 17, about 2 km east. It is located east of Thunder Bay and Nipigon, southwest of Hearst, west of Wawa and north of Sault Ste. Marie. It is situated on the Canadian Pacific Railway route running between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie.

The town's children's park is called Del Earle, named after one of the town's founders. Marathon has a very challenging and scenic 9 hole golf course, world class cross country ski trails, down hill skiing, an indoor swimming pool which is the only one between Thunder Bay, Ontario and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It has plenty of shopping and the town slogans are Built on Paper- Laced with Gold, and MARATHON - SUPERIOR IN THE LONG RUN.

The native reserve of Pic River is located on the outskirts of Pukaskwa National Park, which is the largest national park in Ontario.

Recent developments in the town include a new skatepark, basketball courts and the refinishing of the tennis courts. Road construction in the last few years has also taken place to the most severely degraded roads in the town.

The majority of the land outside the residential area of Marathon are forests and much of it are pine/spruce forests.

Marathon has a geographically important airport (designated CYSP) just north of the Trans-Canada Highway, 2.6 miles Northeast of the townsite.
